Biography

Maryana Orestivna Savka is a Ukrainian poet, children's writer, literary critic, publicist and chief editor and co-founder of Stary Lev Publishing House. Her work includes poetry, journalism, monographic research and children's books. It is known that her poetic works are distinguished by their deep philosophical content and emotional richness.


Biography and education

She was born on February 21, 1973 in the city of Kopychyntsi, Ternopil region.
In her youth, she was engaged in singing and theatre. Graduated from Ukrainian Philology at Lviv University.
During her student years, she was a member of the women's literary group MMYUNNA TUGA, which became an important phenomenon in the literary life of Ukraine. TUGA included famous writers such as Marianna Kiyanovska, Yulia Mishchenko, Natalka Snyadanko, Natalya Tomkiv, Anna Sereda.


Literary activity

Maryana Savka is the author of a number of poetry collections:

  • "Naked Rivers" (1995)
  • "Drawings on stone" (1998)
  • "The bitter mandrake" (2002) - this book became a laureate of the IX Forum of Publishers in Lviv
  • "Love and War" (2002) — co-authored with Marianna Kiyanovska
  • "Tsminu flowers" (2006)
  • "Boston Jazz" (2008)
  • "Shadow of the Fish" (2010)

In addition, she is the author of a monographic study of the Ukrainian emigration press on the territory of Czechoslovakia and several books for children.

Her poetry was published in many literary magazines and almanacs such as "Suchasnist", "Svytovyd", "Thursday", "Kryvbas Courier", "Nemunas", "The Ukrainian Quarterly" and others. She is also present in several poetry anthologies, including "We and She" and "Metamorphoses. The ten best Ukrainian poets of the last ten years".


Translations and international recognition

Maryana Savka's poetry has been translated into several languages, including Polish, English, Belarusian, Russian and Lithuanian.
She is a member of AUP (Association of Ukrainian Writers) and NSPU (National Union of Writers of Ukraine).

In 2003 she became a laureate of the International Journalism Award named after Vasyl Stus for her books of poetry.

Maryana Savka is the co-founder and chief editor of Stary Lev Publishing House, one of the largest and most famous publishing houses in Ukraine, which specializes in publishing children's and contemporary literature. This publishing house became significant in the development of Ukrainian literature and cultural identity, and also won many awards and recognitions.
